SDHC and MicroSD

SD ( Secure Digital) cards are currently the most common memory card standard for portable and mobile devices. Within the framework of this standard, there are 3 types of maps that differ in physical size. In order of decreasing size, these are: SD, MiniSD, MicroSD. Among the significant differences in functionality between the types of SD cards, it is worth noting the presence of a mechanical write protection switch implemented in SD cards and absent on MiniSD and MicroSD cards.

MiniSD-type of SD card. First attempt to miniaturize the SD card. It has dimensions of 20×21, 5×1, 4 mm. At the moment, readers of this type of card are practically not used in manufactured devices. It can work in devices with an SD connector via an adapter.

MicroSD is a type of SD card designed for mobile devices. The growing demand for additional memory for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, media players, navigators, etc.has shown that SD cards do not fully meet the needs of the market. It is quite problematic to create a thin, compact device if it needs to provide space for a card reader with dimensions of 24x32x2. 1 mm (for example, an audio player of a fairly well-known company has dimensions of 29×31, 6×8, 7 mm). To solve this problem, a type of MicroSD card was developed. With all the advantages of an SD card, as well as fully supporting all the specifications of this standard, the MicroSD card has significantly smaller dimensions than SD. Namely, 11x15x0. 7 mm. MicroSD cards are electrically compatible with SD cards and can be used in devices with an SD connector via an adapter.

Today, the most common SD and MicroSD cards that support the SDA2.00 (SDHC-Secure Digital High Capacity) and SDA 3.01 ( SDXC – Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) specifications. Cards that support the SD1.0 and SD1.1 specifications are gradually leaving the market due to the small maximum capacity ( 2 and 4 GB, respectively).

SDHC is a newer card standard than SD, which removes a number of limitations inherent in SD. The maximum amount of memory has been increased to 32 GB, and FAT32 is the default file system. Also, for the SDHC standard, a new, different from SD, card speed marking was adopted.

Class 2-write speed of at least 2 MB / s;
Class 4-write speed of at least 4 MB / s;
Class 6-write speed of at least 6 MB / s;
Class 10-write speed of at least 10 MB/s.

The card read speed is not marked, but it is usually 1.5-2 times faster than the write speed.

SDXC-further development of the SDHC standard. The maximum possible amount of memory has been increased to 2 TB. The default file system is exFAT, which can lead to compatibility issues on a number of operating systems. Theoretically, maps
the SDXC standard should support higher write speeds than SDHC, but at the moment, the values for both types of cards are comparable.

Memory card readers usually have backward compatibility standards. In other words, a device that supports SDXC cards can also work with SDHC and SD cards. SDHC-enabled device-only with SDHC and SD cards, not SDXC.
